As with all such stories there is truth mixed in with fiction/rumor. Aircraft 78-0666 was stationed at Myrtle Beach Sc. in 1991 assigned to the "Green Demons" (fact). From what I have been able to find out the Crew Chiefs was named Damien. It's also a fact that it was retired to the boneyard on 13 Feb 1992, one of the first A-10s to make that last trip! I also heard that the Saudis didn't like the tail number, patch, Crew Chief Combination, Mainly because they thought it was insulting to some religious beliefs (not there own) and the US should be more sensitive to those beliefs. I also heard the US did use the 066 instead of the 666 and did remove SSgt Damien's name from the side of the aircraft (rumor). If anyone knows anything about this please let me know because I think the truth would probably be more interesting than the Urban Legend. (Maybe)

Some people believe that certain numbers are just naturally bad, and when you mess around with them, or the unexplained for that matter, you're just asking for trouble! It's easy to believe in GOOD angels or, hero's of WWII still flying in the skis over Europe but, When it come to the other dark side, nobody want to admit that! Maybe they just don't want to think about it!

O' yea Where is 666 today? It's sitting in the boneyard at DM where it was sent on 13 Feb 1992; it was among the first A-10s to be retired!

666 in the aircraft graveyard, what's with the cross on the ladder door?

666 still on the nose

666 is officially being carried in "non-violate storage" which means that no parts can be taken off it and, it's packed and rapped to protect it from the elements as much as possible. Why? Because it is one of the aircraft that could, if ever needed, be returned to active service.

There have been rumors of the Air Force returning a number of A-10s back to active duty and, the tail numbers have not been chosen. So you see, aircraft 78-0666 the "Demon jet" may some day fly again!

Note: There have been reports of strange lights and unexplained sounds in the area of 666 out in the boneyeard. One man reported hearing the sound of an aircraft gun firing but, stated it had a lot deeper, longer sound than any gun he had ever heard before! What does that sound like to you? A GAU-8A Avenger maybe?

If you think about it, what aircraft do you think Satan (or one of his demons) would fly anyway? Maybe the ugliest, most destructive attack aircraft in the world today, The A-10 Thunderbolt II "Warthog" !!!!

Update- 15 March 2003
666 has been removed from storage and its wing will be referbished to be placed on an active aircraft as part of the "Hog-up" program...The demon jet returns!!! I will keep you up on where 666s wing goes and try to keep an eye on the jet that recives it!

Update- 8 Oct 2005
I'm still receiving emails from people who worked-on or flew 666 during their military service and a lot of them have very strange stories to tell about this aircraft! 666's wing was removed from AMARC last year (2004) and refurbished during the Hog-up Program, or what is now know as SLEP1 (Service Life Extension Program), and placed on an active A-10. I asked which aircraft the Demon's wing when on and was given a tail number and unit. I contacted a member of the unit to let him know which wing was received on that aircraft when it came through the SLEP1 line. The Crew Chief was none too happy when he found out but, when he checked the wings data plate to make sure it was 666's wing, guess what, it wasn't! It seems a tracking error has left us not knowing where the demon's wing went!! It also seems there was nothing easy (and a lot of strange happenings) attached to aircraft 78-666 before it when to the boneyard and today that still holds ture. The "demon jet's" wing is back in the field but where......we do not know!

If you believe in things like this there's an A-10 out there with the wing off a jet some believe was evil, or at the very least has strange stories attached to it. It's legacy contiunes and it starts with a game of "hide-and-seek!"

If you work the A-10 in the field and have had some of your jets which have gone through the SLEP1 line, you may have one that is now "posssessed" by the wing, and sprit, of 78-0666...the Demon jet! To check your wing(s) look in the left or right wing flap track area for a small data plate which will give you the tail number of the aircraft the wing was attached to when it came off the assembly line. If anyone finds the "Demon" wing please let me know because I would like to track this aircraft to see if any more strange things happen now that part of the "Demon jet" is again flying in the A-10 Thunderbolt II "Warthog" fleet!
